Building Sustainable Livelihoods While Restoring Our Environment
Rolan Foundation, in partnership with AUDA-NEPAD, is advancing a practical model of environmental restoration, women and youth empowerment, and sustainable livelihoods through the “Empowering Youth and Women through Beekeeping for Forest and Landscape Restoration” programme. Implemented from 27–29 August 2026, the three-day initiative reached 61 participants, equipping them with knowledge and practical skills in beekeeping, forest and landscape restoration, apiary management, enterprise development, and safety. By connecting ecological restoration with income-generating opportunities, the programme demonstrates how communities can become active partners in protecting their environment while building more resilient livelihoods.
The programme translated training into tangible community assets, with 60 top-bar hives established across two farm locations, creating platforms for continued learning, production, and livelihood development. Participants gained practical experience in hive preparation, baiting, installation, colony management, value addition, record keeping, funding opportunities, and market development. A post-training assessment of 36 participants recorded an average score of 76%, while 67% demonstrated a strong grasp of the knowledge assessed. Importantly, participants identified practical demonstrations and hands-on field activities as among the most valuable aspects of the programme, reinforcing the importance of action-oriented approaches to community development.
For Rolan Foundation, this initiative represents more than a training programme—it is a foundation for long-term community resilience and sustainable impact. Continued monitoring, mentorship, tree planting, business development, market linkages, and access to finance will be critical to transforming the established apiaries into sustainable livelihood opportunities.
